A desk magnifier sits on your table or workbench and holds the lens steady over your work, leaving both hands free. For reading, writing, hobbies, and any task that lasts more than a minute, it removes the strain of holding a magnifier and keeps the image in constant focus.

Why a desk magnifier beats a handheld for long tasks

Holding a magnifier in one hand while you work with the other tires the wrist fast and makes the image wobble. A desk magnifier fixes the lens in place at the right focal distance, so the view stays sharp and your hands stay free for the actual task.

Stand and weighted-base models

Some desk magnifiers sit on a fixed stand at a set height over the page, ideal for reading. Others use a weighted base and a flexible neck so you can position the lens at any angle, better for hobby and inspection work.

Magnifying lamps as desk magnifiers

A magnifying lamp is a desk magnifier with built-in light, mounted on an articulating arm that clamps to the bench. It both lights and enlarges the work, which is why it is the standard for craft, electronics, and beauty tasks. See our magnifying lamps for the lit versions.

Magnification and lens size

Desk magnifiers usually run 2x to 5x. Lower power with a large lens suits reading and a wide field of view. Higher power suits fine detail but covers less area. A bigger lens makes the magnifier easier to use because you do not have to line your eye up so precisely.

Choosing a desk magnifier

For reading, pick a fixed-height stand magnifier with a large lens, ideally with LED. For hobby and bench work, a flexible-neck or clamp lamp magnifier gives the most control. Match the magnification to whether you read or do fine detail work.
